Former officer arrested for testifying against boss

BULAWAYO - A former senior police officer was arrested on Friday after he exposed his former boss in court.

Farai Nyapokoto, a former senior police detective who was based at Bulawayo Central station, was arrested in front of his lawyer Doreen Phulu and Bulawayo magistrate court officials after testfying in the ongoing inquest into the death of Andrew Sibanda and Nehemiah Vumbumu.

The inquest came after Sibandas family said they had evidence that Inspector Tada and his team from Bulawayo Centrals homicide section tortured their son and Vumbunuto to death in March 2008.

The family said the two were killed in custody after being arrested on robbery charges.

However, after finishing his testimony before magistrate John Masimba last Friday, Nyapokoto was arrested by four heavily armed police officers on charges of giving false evidence in court.

Nyapokoto was whisked away to Bulawayo Central in a police truck.

Nyapokoto had told Masimba that Inspector Tada and his team from homicide tortured Sibanda and Vumbunu to death and then took their bodies to a bush area near Queens Park surbub, where they stage-managed a shooting incident, claiming that the two were escaping from arrest.
