Disability rights are human rights and we call upon government to guarantee through the constitution that my constituency, receive life-long monthly allowances to make a living. Currently, government pays irregular public assistance funds barely enough to sustain livelihood of people living with disabilities, said a senior representative for people living with disabilities in Mashonaland East Province, Honeywell Mutemangamba.

Monthly US$20 payments hardly meet requirements of the disabled and government should increase the amount and translate them into allowances. In addition to the allowance, food vouchers would help cushion disabled people from economic hardships, he said.

Mutemangamba added: We want to be represented by people living with disabilities at all levels of state and government institutions. We should have a representative in both the President and Prime Ministers office. All administrative provinces across the country must also have representative Members of Parliament specifically for our welfare. The legislators must be people living with disabilities.

He said people living with disabilities should be economically empowered. He commended the Municipality of Marondera for allocating a piece of farm land to people living with disabilities in the town. The provincial administrators office reportedly promised to provide houses to people living with disabilities. Houses would be allocated through a quota system for people living with disabilities.
