DHIRIHORI - Zanu (PF) hijacked National Heroes Celebrations here and did not acknowledge the presence of MDC at the historically significant gathering. District Administrator (DA) James Chiwaru, read President Mugabes speech at the event held at Marondera East Heroes Acre and attended by some 300 people.
Acknowledging distinguished officials present, Chief Executive Officer for Marondera Rural District Council, Tendai Gundo, said leaders of the party would you please stand up so that people can see you. Zanu (PF) leadership stood up and greeted the disinterested crowd.
Though President Mugabes speech was unusually constructive, a female war veteran sang a song denigrating MDC leadership. Ukawona akamira, unofunga kuti aribho. Pfungwa dzake dzino funga zveku paradza. (On the surface he appears to be right thinking. He is only good at destroying what was built by others).
Part of Mugabes speech urged people to be politically tolerant and direct energy towards nation building instead of fighting each other. He also encouraged people to ensure the new constitution safeguarded gains of the liberation struggle.
This years Heroes Day Commemorations came at a defining moment when the nation is crafting a people driven constitution. I would also want to thank leaders of Front Line States, Sir Seretse Khama, Julius Nyerere of Tanzania, Keneth Kaunda of Zambia and Samora Machael of Mozambique for assisting us in obtaining freedom from colonial rule, read part of the speech.
He also commended SADC countries, former South Africa President Thambo Mbeki and President Jacob Zuma, for striving to make the GPA work.
Dhirihori celebrations were graced by primary school traditional dances. After the entertainment, villagers who contributed US$1 towards hosting the celebrations were served with food.
