Indians snap up diamonds

diamonds_marangeHARARE - Indian buyers snapped up the largest chunk of the 900 000 carats of Marange diamonds auctioned last week, The Zimbabwean can reveal.

Mining industry sources said Indian buyers bought US$38 million worth of the Marange diamonds, or 83 per cent of the tender.

The total value of the diamonds auctioned on August 11 is estimated at around US$46 million, and not US$72 million as previously reported.

“The Indians dominated the auction, snapping up more than half the goods that were on offer,” a senior Ministry of Mines official told The Zimbabwean this week.

The auction was the first of two exports Zimbabwe has been allowed to make following a July agreement with industry watchdog Kimberley Process to resume trade in rough diamonds from controversial diamond fields.
