MDC – leave sanctions alone

The MDC has no business in calling for the removal of restrictive measures imposed on senior Zanu (PF) officials. If the MDC goes by Zanu (PF)s demands that the restrictive measures imposed on Robert Mugabe and his cronies be lifted, they will become an accomplice in supporting and defending Zanu (PF)s abuse of power and corruption.

Zanu (PF) should be held to account for its sins and this can only happen if the party is sincere and reforms for the good of the country and for its own survival.

The EU and the USA have been clear that they will not lift the travel bans on the Zanu (PF) officials as there has been no tangible improvement in the area of human rights.

Zimbabwe is still a country where people are arrested on flimsy political charges.

MPs from the MDC continued to be arrested on spurious charges. This week six MPs from the MDC were arrested in Masvingo on laughable charges of beating people at a Copac meeting. The arrest was just an attempt to frustrate the MDC and its leadership in Masvingo province.

Yet Zanu (PF) wants the issue of lifting restrictive measures addressed by the MDC when Zanu (PF) is not doing anything to show that true reforms are taking place on the ground.

The restrictive measures imposed on Zanu (PF) officials are between Zanu (PF) and those who imposed them. It has nothing to do with the MDC. Zanu (PF) cannot expect the MDC to clean its soiled diapers for them.

Even the EU has called upon those individuals who have been targeted by the restrictive measures to appeal against this ruling directly to the EU or the European Court.

But no-one from Zanu (PF) has done so, as they are aware that the reasons those measures were slapped on them are still there. There is still no rule of law to talk about in Zimbabwe as Zanu (PF) is using State agents to attack defenceless Zimbabweans.
