Quote of the week

Any elite that is allowed to plunder the state and to distort it in its own interests is a profoundly antisocial force.

The elite need to be constantly reined in by society and the challenges to the entrepreneurs, both from within the ANC alliance and from outside, are an essential counter-force towards the tendency to entrenched predation on society. Moreover, democracy itself has to be, if it is to be a real force in society, a living day-to-day practice and not merely the ritual of voting. Trade unions, poor peoples movements and community organisations all have the potential to raise the issues of the day with clarity and vigour and to mobilise real popular support behind their demands for social justice.
