Veteran activists call for MDC merger

mdc_logoJOHANNESBURG - The Movement for the Democratic Change Veterans Activists (MDCVAA) has called for the uniting of the two MDC factions so as to topple Zanu (PF) from power in the next elections.

An MDCVAA workshop for regional and provincial coordinators from all the provinces in Zimbabwe to strategize and chat the way forward was held here on Saturday. Observers from the National Constitutional Assembly and the MDC also attended the workshop.

The executive chair person, Solomon Chikowero, said: We do not recognize the split that happed in the party. Our father is one and that is MDC. We do not want tolerate any split, tribalism or regionalism. The split was not about the people but about the leaders. They have to put their ego aside and unite. We are not a political party and do not operate parallel to the MDC. We advocate for the truth as the vanguard and back bone of the party. We do not want to be silent when things are not well. We are not happy about how MDC is operating now. We want to make sure that MDC wins the next elections. We have to take on Mugabe as a united force.

He said they would start campaigning and mobilizing the people to register and vote for MDC in the next election. He also added that they have identified some democratic forces like the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe Congress of the Trade Unions to partner them as they launch their onslaught against Mugabe.

Chikowero says that in the last elections Arthur Mutambara backed Simba Makoni and some of the votes which went to Makoni and MDC M could have given a united MDC a huge margin of victory.

The MDC VAA national coordinator Lawrence Berejena said: We have realized that divided we fall and united we stand and do not want to repeat that mistake. Some of the founder members are getting exhausted and we want to energize them not to abandon the struggle. We have to speak the same language. MDC is one family that is why MDC-M and MDC-T are using the same name MDC, we are one family. We have got the same goal of removing Zanu from power.

Tichaona Munyanyi, regional coordinator in Harare, complained that Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai was surrounding himself with the wrong people, the mafikizolo (John came lately). He said MDCVAA is the partys watchdog and wants to build houses for their activists destroyed and burnt by Zanu. He added that the association would take care of the children and widows left behind by their parents who died fighting to liberate the country from Zanus dictatorship.
