More Brits choosing cinema at home

Cash-strapped Brits are swapping expensive family outings to the cinema for home cinema systems, a study by retailer Argos found.

The catalogue shopping specialist has seen a 45% increase in demand for home cinema kits year-on-year.

It said its best-selling model was the Bush 5.1 100w home cinema kit, priced at 89.99.

The Argos study also highlighted the 123% increase in Sky+HD subscribers as further evidence people are increasingly opting to watch films in the home.

Last month, UK cinema chain Cineworld announced a 700,000 fall in customer numbers in the first half of the year.

Lee Tinsley, buyer at Argos, said: “With 3D technology set to take off and high-spec Blu-ray technology reducing in cost, people now have easier access to better equipment.”

He added: “Families are now able to watch blockbuster releases at the quality that they would expect at the cinema and at a record speed of conversion to DVD.”
