Angeline Kumbirai Tongogara, wife of the deceased Tongogara, was told to shut up when she drew attention to her impoverished situation. Her late husband, a commander of Zanu’s military wing, was killed on the cusp of independence, and posthumously declared a national hero. However, Mrs Tongogara met Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai last Tuesday at Munhumutapa Buildings and reportedly told him that she was struggling to feed her children.
The 65-year-old widow has found herself at the centre of media frenzy after her relatives attacked her for embarrassing the family.
Tongo’s elder brother castigated her for failing to follow the protocol of first approaching the family for help.
How can she go alone to appeal for help? The real Tongogara family is there,” said Michael.
The Prime Minister’s office has staunchly refused to say what Tsvangirai discussed with the widow. “Yes, she met with the Prime Minister, but the meeting was private and confidential, the PMs spokesperson, Luke Tamborinyoka told journalists at Munhumutapa Building. Tamborinyoka said this was Tsvangirais second meeting with the widow.
