Car importers warned

HARARE - Thousands of Zimbabweans intending to beat the deadline of the import ban placed on second hand vehicles risk being conned by Japanese vehicle exporting companies, it has been learnt.

According to Road Traffic (Construction, Equipment and Use) Regulations published last month, the Ministry of Transport is also phasing out left-hand drive vehicles. The regulations come into effect on March 1 2011. Vehicles older than five years will be affected and the move will push the price of locally assembled cars beyond the reach of many.

According to a statement by Trade Car View, a supplier of second hand vehicles into the country, importers should be wary of companies offering crazy deals in a bid to lure customers. As you are well aware used vehicle imports into Zimbabwe will stop for vehicles older than 2006 from March next year. A word of warning: we strongly suggest you stick with reputable exporters! We cannot say this in any clearer terms. Many of you will be rushing to get a great deal but be very aware. If it is too good to be true it is.

Many smaller companies will be popping up with crazy deals. Also the smaller exporter may well not have the power to get the unit you want from them (if they actually own it) on the ship in time before the deadline, the company said in a statement.

Trade Car View said 2006 models would be expensive to import and out of reach for many people. Now is the time to import. We suggest you do not leave this too late as you really need to have your vehicle on the water by about mid February. This does not leave much time. There will be congestion so we suggest you start right away with no delay. Please do not leave this until the last minute, warned the company.
