Five top MDC-T youth activists, Peter Nyadembera, Admire Takawira, Fred Munemo, Charles Ngwena and Brian Gwekwerere Phiri, were arrested last week for allegedly threatening Zanu (PF) youths and undermining the office of President Robert Mugabe.
Gwekwerere was picked up by police Sunday while Nyadembera was arrested on Monday for what police described as threatening Zanu (PF) youths with a fist fight. Ngwena and Takawira were later arrested on Tuesday when they visited Gwekwerere and Nyadembera at the police station. They were accused of undermining Mugabes office. An elderly Zanu (PF) and Border Gezi Militia in his fifties, Tendai Jemwa of Cherutombo, claimed that Takawira and Ngwena mocked and insulted him when they asked the logic behind his continued service as Mugabes militia. The militia made a police report resulting in the arrest of the two MDC-T youth activists, said a source at the district police headquarters.
Nyadembera and Gwekwerere were later released without charge.
Targeted MDC youths are employed as council security officers, a department Zanu (PF) wanted controlled by the junta which terrorized suspected MDC supporters in the run up to June 27, 2008 Presidential elections re run. Zanu (PF) reportedly used council service firearms to terrorize MDC members during the bloody terror campaign.
Council security officers are also responsible for keeping plundering of municipal property under check. Harassment of MDC council security officers could also be aimed at muzzling efforts by the MDC led council, to unearth suspected massive embezzlement of council assets and livestork by top Zanu (PF) officials when council was run by Mugabes losing councilors.
Meanwhile, residents here have been disturbed by the selective application of justice by the police. Zanu (PF) thugs who insulted MDC-T Member of Parliament, Ian Kay, at Rujeko Shopping Centre on Thursday, have not been apprehended, despite their behaviour. Matambudziko Midzi shouted insulting and vulgar words at the MDC-T legislator while other Mugabe party youths cheered him on.
