Tsvangirai tipped to win

But analysts fear Mugabe's military will not allow him to take office
morgan_tsvangirai_4HARARE - The Mass Public Opinion Institute (MPOI) has predicted that Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai (Pictured) will win the next elections by a margin of six to one against his closest rival, Ro

In its latest report MPOI says Tsvangirai will win the Presidential election by 57 percent while Mugabe is expected to get 10 percent of the vote. The survey was co-ordinated by the University of Zimbabwe’s Eldred Masunungure and Anyway Nyapadzwa (formerly with MPOI, now with Idazim). The survey results have now been incorporated into the reputable Afrobarometer Survey published in South Africa and used by the World Bank, Freedom House and the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, among others.

Nyapadzwa said the survey was based on interviews with 1 200 adults around Zimbabwe. Although the survey was conducted in 2009, the final report was only concluded this year in August 2010. Nyapadzwa said the results were valid as nothing had changed significantly on the political landscape. However, a new survey had been concluded and results were expected in February 2011.

Mugabe has declared that elections will be held in June 2011, when a new constitution is expected to be in place. Analysts have expressed surprise at his insistence when all indications point to a massive loss for him and his Zanu (PF) party.

One political analyst, name withheld for obvious reasons, said the international community should ensure that if Tsvangirai won the election as predicted, he would be allowed to take office.

In 2008, Tsvangirai won the first round of voting but results were doctored to force a run-off vote from which he was forced to withdraw after hundreds of his supporters were killed.
