Sources at Karoi Prison said the story in this newspaper prompted investigations and at least one ton of the fertilizer was returned at midnight on Saturday.
“We woke up Sunday morning and realise that at least one ton of the fertilizer was back in the storeroom. We were told by night duty officers that the fertilizer was returned at midnight the previous night,” said the sources.
They said this week prison auditors were going to take stock of prison property at Karoi prison as a result of the story.
“We are expecting to see auditors, who have since been ordered to come and investigate the case, anytime soon,” they said.
Manhivi lent Hurungwe farm prison four tonnes of urea fertilizer after it had run out of the commodity last year. But they did not use the fertilizer, and it was returned to Karoi earlier this year.
Realising that the fertilizer was retuned, sources said Manhivi went on to keep it for private use at her farm in the same area.
They also alleged that Manhivi, who has a reputation as untouchable war veteran last year stole farm inputs and nothing was done by the authorities. Officers said morale was very low because of the officer-in-charge, who they allege victimises them for supporting the MDC. – Tavada Mafa
