Abolish training – youth

BULAWAYO - Students and youth groups here have called for the abolishment of the National Youth Training programme saying it has no place in modern democracy.

Speaking at debate organized by the Matabelelend Forum of Civic Society this week the youths said the programme had been taken over by partisan agendas and had become synonymous with violence and rape.

I think the Border Gezi Training centres are an insult to the youths of this country. What is patriotic about being taught to rape, kill or beat other fellow citizens? This centres should be forthwith abolished and the vote for these centres should be used to finance our universities and tertiary institutions, said John Ncube from ZINASU.

The youths and other participants freely expressed their vigorous dislike of the programme and called for its immediate abolishment.

You cannot teach a young person about patriotism. Patriotism is not a preserve of one political party, said Mercy Mapungwana of Scripture Union.

Last week, Zanu (PF) Minister of Youth and Indigenization Savious Kasukuwere said his ministry was planning to have the programme introduced in pre-schools by the year 2013.
