Theresa Makone pays visit to Mbare victims

Hon. Theresa Makone, the Home Affairs Minister today toured the house of Councillor Paul Gorekore in Mbare that was set ablaze by Zanu PF thugs on Monday. She said she was shocked that Zanu PF youths could be used to carry out such callous actions.

Zanu PF youths on Monday destroyed the councillors house, an MDC Mbare district office and attacked MDC youths at the offices. Councillor Gorekores brother Shingirai is in hospital after he was seriously injured in one of the attacks while he and other 12 MDC youths are in police custody at Mbare Police Station after they were arrested by the police on the pretext that they were protecting them. They have been denied food since then.

Most of the property at the Gorekore house was destroyed while some was looted by the known Zanu PF hooligans. The Gorekore family has been left homeless due to the destruction. Hon. Makone said the violence was unacceptable as no amount of political violence calls for such brutality.

It is ridiculous, you cannot as a minister expected not to say anything and stick to policy issues only. This is not interference, no more, no less, she said briefing the journalists after the visit.

Meanwhile, the MDC Youth Assembly has strongly condemned the organised Zanu PF violence and thuggery being perpetrated against the defenceless people of Mbare, Budiriro, Epworth and other democracy loving people around the country.

We note with concern the polices ineffectiveness in stopping the violence and bringing the perpetrators to book. We are concerned by the harassment of our Youth Assembly members who are being are arrested on flimsy grounds yet they are the victims of the Zanu PF sponsored violence, the MDC Youth Assembly chairperson Thamsanqa Mahlangu said at a press conference at the MDC headquarters, Harvest House today. He said the MDC Youth Assembly did not want Zimbabwe to be ungovernable because of a few misguided people who are being used for selfish means by certain politicians.
