The order was granted yesterday and the police were made aware of the order that also granted ZCTU permission to march today. However, this morning armed police stormed ZCTU Bulawayo offices telling more than 200 ZCTU activists gathered that there will be no march. This is despite the High Court order.
In Gweru, the ZCTU District Secretary was summoned this morning by the police who then showed her an article saying gatherings had been banned and then asked her if she had not seen the article. They threatened unspecified action if the ZCTU went ahead with the commemorations.
In Harare, the police were informed that the ZCTU intended to commemorate IWD to which they have said they need to monitor closely the current situation in the country before responding. The Zimbabwe lawyers for Human Rights are also handling the matter and if the police maintain their stance, the ZCTU will make an urgent High Court application today to allow the commemorations to go ahead.
We will keep you updated.
Kindest regards,
Khumbulani Ndlovu
