ERC Director arrested

The Director of the Election Resource Center, Tawanda Chimhini has been arrested by police in Harare.

Chimhini, who was summoned to report at Harare Central Police station today, has been charged for contravening Section 40 (C) Subsection 1g and Section 2 of the Electoral Act for allegedly conducting voter education exercises without authority from the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission.

On Saturday, three personnel from the Election Resource Center were arrested in Borrowdale on allegations of conducting illegal voter registration as well.

The Zimbabwean has learnt that the three will appear as State witnesses when Chimhini's case goes before the courts.

Chimhini is being represented by Lawyers from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights.

Last Saturday five MDC-T activists were arrested in Msasa, Harare on allegations of conducting illegal voter education.

Their arrest follows another one of 19 MDC-T members who were arrested Last month in Hatcliffe on the same charges.
