Gokwe Kabuyuni MP detained at Kwekwe Central Police Station

Gokwe Kabuyuni MP, Hon. Costin Muguti who is seeking urgent medical attention is still detained at Kwekwe Central Police Station after he was re-arrested yesterday outside Kwekwe Prison.

A warrant of arrest was issued against the MP by a Kadoma magistrate last month for failing to appear in court for political charges. The MP could not attend court then as he was hospitalised. He was arrested last week in Gokwe and taken to Kwekwe where a separate charge of threatening to assault Chief Samuel Samambwa of Zhombe was laid against him.

Hon. Muguti was remanded in custody up to yesterday when he was granted a US$50 bail. However, he was re-arrested outside the prison. The police are denying him access to medical attention, which he is in urgent need of.

Meanwhile, Nyanga South MP Hon. Douglas Mwonzora and 30 MDC supporters were today remanded to 29 April at the Nyanga magistrate court. The 31 members are facing fake political violence charges. During their court appearance on 29 April, they expect to get a trial date.

In Bulawayo, the MDC Vice President, Hon. Thokozani Khupes driver, Witness Dube, was yesterday arrested by the police on forged charges of writing obscene words on a Zanu PF anti sanctions petition.

Before his arrest, Zanu PF thugs had tried to force him to sign the petition but he refused. The police then traced Dube for about three hours before arresting him. Dube is detained at Nkulumane Police Station. The Zanu PF groupings are operating from street corners and shopping malls after the Bulawayo City authorities refused to let them use council schools as sub stations for the petition signing.

In Mashonaland Central province, employees at the Freda Rebecca Mine in Bindura have been instructed to sign the violence petition. The mine management received a letter from Zanu PF which stated that every employee is mandated to sign the petition or they will face unspecified action. – The MDC Today – Issue 174
