He was speaking to The Zimbabwean after commissioning a water pumping plant in Gweru and handing over refuse trucks donated to the local council. In apparent reference to President Robert Mugabes call for the holding of elections this year, Conze said it would be a monumental blunder for Zimbabweans to agree to take part in rushed polls.
“When I see that some people are digging up graves after having been violently attacked while areas such as Mbare are under siege, I ask myself whether the country is ready for elections,” he said adding that personally he did not believe in a rushed poll.
“There has to be a clarified roadmap for any election to take place anywhere in the world and the situation prevailing in the country is not conducive for holding polls at the moment,” he added. Citing the arrest of Energy Minister Elton Mangoma as an example, Conze bemoaned the countrys judicial system saying it seemed that politics was prevailing over judges. He said Germany would continue to support the European Unions stance on pushing for the restoration of human rights in Zimbabwe.
