The councillors, during the 10th ordinary full council meeting last week, agreed that all those in arrears must not be disconnected but should instead approach the local authority and opt for a settlement plan.
Mutare Town Clerk Obert Muzawazi said the council was owed US$19 million and the local authority should devise a mechanism to collect the revenue.
“We have to come up with a plan to make sure that our debtors pay us. They can also approach us so that we can come up with a flexible payment plan,” said Muzawazi.
Mutare Mayor, Brian Lesly James: “We need to sit down and come up with a flexible payment plan to our resident which caters for everyone across the board.
Residents interviewed said they could not pay the rentals since they were earning meagre salaries. The government is the major employer in the city, with the bulk of
workers being directly employed in the civil service and earning no more than US$200 a month.
