ZLHR calls for investigations into police conduct

zlhr_logHARARE - Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) has called for an immediate investigation into the conduct of unruly police officers who caused commotion and pandemonium on Saturday in Glen Norah when they indiscriminately beat up worshippers.

Ironically the behaviour of the police comes hard on the heels of the calls by SADC for Harare to put an end to violence in the country. However, the police as has become the norm in the country took no heed of the call and beat up innocent worshippers who were praying for peace.
“ZLHR urges restraint by the police, an immediate investigation into the unlawful conduct of the police involved in Saturday’s disruptions, and calls for an opening up of space for people to freely assemble, associate and worship rather than the criminalisation of such lawful activities,” said in a statement.
Children in the vicinity of the church were also caught in a cross fire as the police in full right gear threw canisters to the petrified worshippers. Some people are still receiving treatment for the bashing their got from the police. “ZLHR unreservedly condemns the events of Saturday 9 April 2011 and the indiscriminate violence meted out by police whose responsibility is to see that fundamental freedoms such as freedom of assembly, expression and worship, are enjoyed by all Zimbabwe citizens. Such criminal behaviour makes a mockery of the SADC Troika Communique, issued in Livingstone on 31 March 2011 in which the Zimbabwe government was warned to immediately end the harassment, arbitrary arrests, intimidation and violence which is currently prevailing in the country.”
Zimbabweans are now afraid of the police who are the supposed-to-be peacekeepers. In the past the police have put the law into their hands and have beaten up innocent people, absurdly not enquiry has been made into the actions of the police.
