Lyons Maid vendors chased out of town

HARARE - Milk producer and processor, Dairibord Holdings Zimbabwe Limited (DHZL) has been embarrassed by the Harare City Council (HCC) which has chased its Lyons Maid vendors out of the city.

Lyons Maid is a subsidiary of the wealthy DHZL, currently led by former Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) President, Anthony Mandiwanza.

The prominent businessman also sits on the boards of various other firms listed on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE).

“We are no longer allowed to enter the city centre because our sister firm, Dairibord, has still not paid its levies to the Harare City Council,” a Lyons Maid worker said in an exclusive interview.

“We used to make a lot of cash selling in the city centre but we are no longer allowed to do so. If the City Council officials see you in the city centre they just take your products away from you. If they want, they can arrest you and then you must pay a fine.”

The Lyons Maid worker said they were now being treated in the same way as vendors selling fruit, vegetables and sweets, as well as various wares bought at mainly Chinese-owned shops. Dairibord diversified into fruit drinks and then bought the Lyons Maid franchise. The firm currently has a market capitalisation of $75 496 928,76 on the ZSE. Its shares are being snapped up by punters for $1,89. The blue chip counter also operates a subsidiary in Malawi.
