Zingwe has been suspended on corruption-related allegations, which include robbing council of money amounting to $24 000.
He has also been accused of trying to use unlawful means in paying for a delivery of 30 tonnes of water treatment chemicals and 2 000 street lights.
Kwekwe Town Clerk Ngwena Musara, Acting Treasurer Morris Mutema and council Internal Auditor Tsitsi Chitsa have all given evidence to a committee handling the matter. In their stories, the officials say Zingwe indeed committed all the charges levelled against him. The committee is chaired by Kwekwe magistrate Tendai Mahwe.
Mayor Tobaiwa told The Zimbabwean that he was determined to use the remaining time of his term in cleansing council of corruption. “We want a transparent council and everyone corrupt should answer for their actions,” he said. He said he would be a happy man if he left council clean of any record of corruption.
On the matter of Zingwe, Tobaiwa said only Chamber Secretary, Lucia Mkandla, was yet to testify. After that Zingwe will be put to his defence as he is denying the charges.
