Rookie Award beckons for Billiart, Mushekwi

nyasha_mushekwiJOHANNESBURG - The Zimbabwean duo of Nyasha Mushekwi (pictured) and Khama Billiart is among the front runners to win the Jet Club PSL Rookie of the Year Award following outstanding debuts in the Absa Premiership.

Mamelodi Sundowns player Mushekwi and Billiart of Ajax Cape Town are among the players that caught the eye of the organizers after playing key roles in their respective teams quest for the league title during a thrilling 2010/11 season.

The South African pair of Amazulu hotshot striker Lehlohonolo Majoro and Bloemfontein Celtics Mulomowandau Mathoho as well as Bidvest Wits starlet Bhongolwethu Jayiya are also in the running to win the award.

The Jet PSL Club Rookie of the Year in South African football is awarded to the most outstanding rookie of the season. To be considered a rookie, a player must be in his first year in the PSL. The award was established ten years ago and is sponsored by retail giant Jet.

The two Zimbabwean internationals are enjoying top form as the league reaches the finish line.

The diminutive Billiart, who was the lesser known of the two earlier this season, has been a major inspiration in Ajax s bid for a maiden league title.

He has mesmerized defences with his speed down the wings and scored eight goals to help his side maintain its stranglehold at the top of the 16-team league.

Compatriot Mushekwi, a proven goalscorer with Caps United in his homeland has carried that form to South Africa, and has netted 11 league goals, three fewer than leading scorer, fellow Zimbabwean Knowledge Musona.

His goals however have not been enough to keep Sundowns in contention for the title.

Musona, meanwhile, is the reigning Jet Club PSL Rookie of the Year following a successful 2009/10 season at championship hopefuls Kaizer Chiefs.
