Gang jailed for issuing fake notes

MASVINGO - A gang of four men from Harare were jailed for one year each after defrauding local business people by issuing fake bank notes.

Local magistrate Stanford Mambanje jailed Valentine Nyamande (22), George Madzivadondo (32), Tatenda Rusere (21) and Tatenda Makombe (23), saying that they had committed a serious offence. The state represented by prosecutor James Murambiza told the court that the gang which was travelling in a white Mercedes Benz approached Hilda Chakanyuka and bought four kg of dried kapenta with a fake $100.

The gang received change of $80 and disappeared. Chakanyuka later discovered that she was conned and made a report to the Criminal Investigation Department. The same day, the gang tricked Lorraine Nyajinha as they tried to buy a computer mouse using a fake $100 bill.

Nyajinha did not have change. One of the men pulled a $20 from his pocket and bought the mouse. Then one of the men asked for two $50 notes and gave her a $100 note. She later discovered it was fake. Detective launched a manhunt leading to the arrest of the four. They were ordered to pay back all their victims before end of this month.
