Chinese more dangerous than sanctions: Chapfika

david_chapfikaGWERU- Zanu (PF)s Central Committee member David Chapfika has broken ranks and labelled plans for Chinese investors to operate in the country as more dangerous to the party than so-called sanctions.

The National Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Board (NIEEB) chairperson made the startling revelations at a tense party coordinating meeting at Mkoba Teachers College. Chinese are our all-weather friends, yes, but the way some of them are operating is damaging to our economy and to our party, he said.
Even if sanctions were to be removed today, our economy would continue to be liquidated because the Chinese now dominate the retail sector – despite clear indications that the area is meant for locals.Chapfika cited an example in his home constituency as evidence of the way in which the Chinese are hurting the economy.
Where I come from in Mutoko, the Chinese are operating flea markets, you see them displaying wares and even selling our national flag, he said.
That is unacceptable. They are flooding the market with cheap materials, damaging our local entrepreneurs.
Chapfika said he had led some Zanu (PF) officials in engagements with the Chinese embassy in Harare, but the problem had not been solved.
The heavy Chinese presence throughout Zimbabwe is the result of Zanu (PF)s Look East policy after is falling out with western countries over human rights and the Mugabe regimes corruption and maladministration. Asian financiers, whose ties with the party date back to the liberation struggle, have pumped millions of dollars into the partys projects.
