Criminal activity by cops increases

police_zimMUTARE Involvement by police officers in illicit deals and criminal activity is on the increase in Manicaland province, according to statistics released last week.

Officer Commanding Police in Manicaland, Munorwei Matutu, said at least 73 police officers had been suspended or dragged before the criminal courts in the first three months of the year.
He said of the 73, eight officers were taken to criminal courts while 11 were suspended by police from duty while other 54 were summoned to appear before internal disciplinary body.
The police boss warned corrupt police officers that their days were numbered in the force.
We are working round the clock to weed out corrupt officers within our rank and file. There is no room for indiscipline in the police, Matutu said.
But, members of the public, especially transporters have voiced concern over the behaviour of the police which their described as pathetic and highly corrupt.
They said top police officials were doing much to stop the rot in the force and instil discipline.
The officers are accused of soliciting for bribes from motorists as well as being involved in criminal activities such as armed robbery.
Instead of maintaining law and order, the police officers are now working in cahoots with criminals, Takunda Kwenda from Sakubva High Density said.
We are no longer safe. The top officials are just talking and talking without necessary action or measures. Civic groups also blasted the police for applying the law selectively, especially to members of the opposition political parties and Non Governmental Organisations (NGO).
Bertha Nyaoda, a coordinator of a local civic organisation, said: Its not fair that some people have to apply for a permission to hold their meetings while others just do without going through the same process. We are not happy about police conduct.
Recently, three members of Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) were dragged before the court to answer charges of armed robbery, extortion and theft.
