The party said recently that the lives of youth president, Solomon Madzore, his brother the MP for Glen View South, Paul Madzore, and secretary general Promise Mkwananzi were in danger, as they believe the police have put a $10 000 bounty on their heads.
“We have it on good authority that the lives of the MDC leadership are in danger. Reliable sources in the intelligence organisation have confidentially informed us that Zanu (PF) has teamed up with the police to eliminate them,” said the party’s youth in a recent statement.
These three are said to have been implicated in the alleged murder of a police officer in Glen View two weeks ago and for allegedly fuelling uprisings against the regime of President Robert Mugabe.
The operation is said to be led by one Jim Kunaka, believed to be an operative of Mugabe’s hated Central Intelligence Organisation. He is also the chairperson for the Zanu (PF) youth league in Harare.
MDC youth in South Africa, who also confirmed having heard the reports, said they were “very worried and concerned” about the safety of their leaders.
“The threat to the lives, safety and security of our leaders are very serious issues and we will not take this lightly. We call upon all the relevant authorities, partners and well-wishers to assist in ensuring the safety of our leaders,” said the MDC SA youth assembly.
Madzore and Mkwananzi flew back to Zimbabwe on Monday from Johannesburg, where they attended the SADC Summit.
