The concert, dubbed “A Tribute to John Chibadura”, will be held in Chitungwiza on 4 August. Chibadura died in Harare on August 4 1999.
While Chibadura, whose real name was John Nyamukokoko, played sungura music, Urban Grooves artists that include King Shaddy, Trevor Dongo, ExQ, Extra Large and Stunner among other local artistes have united to commemorate his contribution to local music.
The proceeds of the concert will go to Chibadura’s family.
In an interview King Shaddy, who is organising the gig, said: “We came up with this idea of holding the concert after we realised that little was being done to acknowledge pioneers of Zimbabwean music.”
He will perform his new single – Tribute to Chibadura – released last month.
Said King Shaddy: “I released the single after appreciating Chibadura’s special reggae music. The songs display his versatility and ability to appeal to varying audiences. I would like therefore to encourage other prominent musicians to celebrate yesteryear artists.”
The single features remixes of the hit song Zuva Rekufa Kwangu.
Chibadura’s album titled Reggae Hits is proving popular with fans at the moment, and some musicians have been remixing songs from the album with dancehall and Urban Grooves sounds.
