2 000 nurses jobless

More than 2 000 nurses are currently jobless, according to statistics by the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare.

This comes after the minister of Finance Tendai Biti froze the filling of all vacant posts in the public service in June last year, although he made provision for institutions to apply for exemptions in exceptional circumstances.

The situation has been exacerbated by the fact that newly-qualified nurses are bonded and cannot seek employment anywhere else.

The health ministry suffers from a chronic shortage of staffing personnel that seriously compromises service delivery.

Deputy Minister of Health and Child Welfare Dr Douglas Mombeshora said, “We have engaged the Ministry of Finance to release funds so that we can hire more nurses,” he said.

Meanwhile, nurses who finished training and cannot be absorbed in the public service have requested the government to release them from bonding since they want to earn a living.
