Zifa lobbies for govt funding

The Zimbabwe Football Association is lobbying for funding from the national fiscus amid revelations that the soccer mother body is technically bankrupt and saddled with a staggering $1m debt.

According to a report presented by the association's C.E.O Jonathan Mashingaidze, to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Education, Sport, Arts and Culture on the state of football in the country last week, Zifa requested urgent recapitalisation and also lobbied for a national lottery scheme, arguing that this is the practice in other countries.

The cash- strapped association also revealed that it was being weighed down by prohibitive levies by the Sports and Recreation Commission, local authorities and police.

In the report, Zifa also lamented its dwindling fan base and a dented image due to corrupt practices. Mashingaidze said in his report there was" a culture of mismanagement driven by patronage and impunity, little appreciation of good governance and poor marketing strategies."
