Hooligans armed with clubs and stones waited at the Pfupajena Stadium exits until the rally was over and attacked MDC supporters as they left the venue.
MDC President Morgan Tsvangirai had just left the area after vowing to the crowd that he would end a "reign of terror" if he formed an exclusive MDC government in the next election.
The police reacted swiftly to the disturbance, dispersing the crowd at the stadium.
A car dealer in town, Shame Moyo, said his car was damaged in the disturbances and he urged the government to act against political violence.
"It is critically important to ensure that there is a peaceful atmosphere in which all parties can campaign freely without fear of violence," he said.
