UNICEF donates vehicles

The United Nations Children Education Fund (UNICEF) recently donated seven top of the range Toyota Hilux vehicles to the Ministry of Education, Arts, Sports and Culture in Matabeleland South to boost the depreciating educational standards in the province.

Mat South provincial education director, Tumiseng Thabela, confirmed the donation.

“I can confirm that we received seven vehicles from our partners who understood one of our priorities to be transport. Teachers and their school heads had a tendency of relaxing due to lack of monitoring, a situation that compromised the education sector here,”said Thabela.

Each vehicle will be deployed to one of the seven districts. It will be used by district education officers to monitor the progress and performances of both teachers and school in order to maintain high educational standards.

She added that it was very difficult for district education officers to visit schools because of transport challenges.

The noble gesture comes in the wake of the continuous depreciation of educational standards in Matabeleland South. This year, of the 32 secondary schools registered to sit exams in Gwanda, seven of them recorded a zero per cent pass rate.
