The hospital has been lying idle since its completion 10 years ago. This has affected more than 200 000 locals who are forced to travel outside the district in search of health care and treatment. Water connections and the deployment of medical staff have been cited as the reasons for the delay.
Locals are forced to travel to Gokwe, about 60Km from Mtora, in order to get medical attention. For serious health cases, they go as far afield as Kwekwe or Gweru.
Speaking after a tour of Nembudziya, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai said:
“I have told Madzorera that the hospital should start operating in two weeks. I have also told him that if that does not happen, he is fired. I have also told Nkomo if he does not facilitate water connections at the hospital in the same period, his job is gone.”
Tsvangirai reiterated his belief that health was key to life and so it should never be compromised. The opening of the hospital would bring relief to thousands of locals, many of whom cannot afford to travel elsewhere.
