Police crash meeting

Police disrupted a meeting organised by the Women Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCoZ), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) comprised of women rights activists, to discuss ways of increasing women’s participation in Zimbabwe’s peace building process.

About 200 women had gathered at Maboleni shopping centre when plain clothes state security agents arrived.

“We were advised by unidentified persons that we were supposed to immediately report to the police station,” WCoZ Midlands Provincial Co-ordinator, Linda Musiyiwa, said. “When we got to the station we were told that the meeting had been banned because it was political and all those gathered were supposed to disperse right away.

“We tried to negotiate, but it was useless. Some women had travelled more than 20km to come to the meeting, only to be told to turn around and go home,” said Musiyiwa.
