Mukoweshuro, was a lecturer of Political Science and International Relations at Zimbabwe's prime institute of higher learning and passed away on Friday. His friend Elias Mudzuri who also comes from Masvingo said that the late intellectual deserved hero status because of the role he played before and after independence.
"He was a man with great depth, a true hero who deserved to be buried at the Heroes' Acre. Many CIOs and diplomats were taught by Mukonoweshuro and indeed Zimbabwe has lost an intellectual," said Mudzuri.
Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai said:
"I am deeply troubled today at the passing away of Eliphas, one of the finest men in the country. I don't have doubts that he deserved hero status. Personally he served me loyally," said Tsvangirai.
Mukonoweshuro was buried just a few kilometers from the country's national heroes acre which has now become a preserve for those loyal to Zanu (PF).
Many luminary Zimbabweans, who have distinguished themselves in various fields, have not been considered heroes, simply because they do not belong to the former ruling party. Tsvangirai gave the example of iconic Chimurenga music maestro, Thomas Mapfumo, who he called a true hero.
"Where will you bury Thomas Mapfumo when he dies? We should all agree that he made his contribution to the country and deserves hero's status," said Tsvangirai.
