International defender, Gilbert Mapemba, says he is ready for the gruelling challenge of playing in South Africa’s ABSA Premiership, following his pre-season move from Harare giants, Caps United.

Mapemba, hailed as an excellent signing by Swallows when he joined the club, told The Zimbabwean that he was happy to be reunited with Oscar Machapa, his former teammate at the Harare-based Makepekepe.

“I am very happy to have finally made the move to South Africa, where the game is more professionally run,” said the 26-year-old national team right-back, who also left a lasting impression at Rustenburg-based Platinum Stars two weeks before signing with The Dube Birds.

“I have been well received by the whole family here. The executive and the players have all been very good to me, allowing me to settle in well, while the coach (Gordon Igesund) is excellent and knows how to get the best out of his players.”

Mapemba is also relishing a possible link-up with former Caps United team-mate Machapa down the right flank – in what he says will help them relive the days when they combined to make Caps United Zimbabwe’s “Cup Kings”.

“I played with Machapa for two seasons at Caps United and our combination was one of the best in the league. Training facilities are excellent and we are working under a more qualified and excellent coach,” added Mapemba.

He is, however, not oblivious of the high fence he has to scale before he can enter the Swallows starting line-up, but remains unperturbed.

“There is tight competition for positions at the club, but that has always been a part of the game, which is very good for the team,” said Mapemba.

“I know that whoever gets in the starting line-up will be forced to put in their best effort, thereby creating a winning mentality that will benefit the team.”

In the long run, the 26-year-old says his main aim will be to win trophies with Swallows.
