Security reform debate vital: NANGO

The current debate on security reform should not be polarised and every Zimbabwean should be given an opportunity to contribute effectively to it, says the National Association of Non Governmental Organisations.

"We demand strong non-partisan State institutions which are run professionally,” said NANGO following a three-day workshop last week.

The organisation will now carry out more research and become more vocal in its activities towards a human-centred security sector to allow peace to prevail in Zimbabwe.

"We want to achieve this, there is an imperative need to strengthen the Organ for National Healing, Reconciliation and Integration," said a NANGO statement.

"We offer ourselves to continue contributing to raise awareness around institutional reform and to push for national vision in this field."

Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has regularly asked the security chiefs to stick to army work and not get involved with civilian work.

President Robert Mugabe has, however, said Tsvangirai must not meddle with the security sector because they are "a tried and tested leadership" having fought during the liberation struggle.
