Police continue Mujuru fire probe

Police say forensic investigations are underway into the death of General Solomon Mujuru, who was burnt to cinder at the farm house he occupied in Beatrice last week. They have interviewed 23 people so far.

Power brokers in the Mujuru camp strongly suspect foul play but have been gagged. Only Zanu (PF) spokesman Rugare Gumbo is authorised to comment.

Police spokesman Wayne Bvudzijena says investigations are still underway and police have questioned guards at the house and the maid.

MDC secretary general Tendai Biti told a rally in Mutare over the weekend that he suspected Mujuru had been killed by Zanu (PF) in a convoluted succession battle.

“We hold Zanu (PF) responsible for the killing of General Solomon Mujuru," Biti said. "Zanu (PF) invests in violence and they now engage in burning people. That’s the Zanu (PF) we know. Violence is in their DNA. That’s what they know best and their fingerprints show violence.”

Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, who asked MDC supporters to observe a moment of silence in honour of Mujuru at a rally on Sunday, described him as a "people's hero."

“You don’t need a Zanu (PF) Politburo to bestow that on you. It’s the people that bestow that recognition. People came to the National Heroes’ Acre in their numbers to bury the people’s hero. The struggle for people’s freedom is not a private or party affair,” he said.

There has been intense speculation over Mujuru’s death.

Mugabe’s spokesman George Charamba used the state-controlled media to slam independent newspapers for speculating over the cause of death.

“There is politics that thrives on mischief. Why are these questions being raised? Why ahead of the results of a forensic investigation?” asked Charamba.

“We are getting to a situation where a little-informed media run by uneducated people builds foolish ideas to create violence in society. Everyone is mourning the death of this enormous figure in our history; and here they are, stoking the fire of hatred.”
