Local celebs lowly perceived

Zimbabwean celebrities have been described as the least recognized and respected figures in the world of show business.

Talented urban grooves vocalist, Trevor Dongo, lamented that as “celebrities”, they were not being given the attention and respect they tirelessly worked hard for.

“People here do not appreciate what we do. People have a mentality that as long as it’s local it’s embarrassing.

“Go to South Africa or Zambia, they support each other. Look at the popularity of South African and Zambian music here, is it better that ours? The only difference is their market is very supportive, a culture that is still alien amongst our people,” he said.

Local music has over the years been playing second fiddle to foreign music such as Rhumba, Kwaito House music; rap, soul and R ‘n’ B.

Though Jonathan Moyo, then minister of Media, information and Publicity, introduced the 75 per cent local content policy, it has suffered a natural death as the local airwaves continue to overshadow locally brewed music.
