In Somalia, a devastating drought has seen thousands of people fleeing the country in search of food which has diverted the UNHCR attention from other countries such as Zimbabwe.
“As you might be aware there are cases of more people being displaced in Somalia and recently in Ivory Coast and other cases in the world with greater humanitarian crisis so donors mostly channels funds to those operations. So, Zimbabwe, which is a small operation with a small number of immigrants compared to the above cases, is now getting a small portion of assistance from donations,” Joakim Duan, UNHCR Protection Associate, told The Zimbabwean.
The organisation also confirmed that in spite of efforts made by the Government of National Unity (GNU) to bring stability to Zimbabwe, hundreds of asylum seekers are still flocking to South Africa.
UNHCR Zimbabwe Resident Representative, Marcelline Hepie, said; "Yes, there are still many Zimbabweans flocking to South Africa which they think is wealthy. Despite the fact that Zimbabwe has improved its economic, political and social situations we still have some people flocking to South Africa for so-called greener pastures."
