Several youth organizations have said that they are being excluded, but Matutu claimed that the US$1 million currently sitting in the bank is for all youth, regardless of political affiliation.
“The money has gone into the bank and we are now waiting for people to make proposals, the assessment of proposals takes time,” said Matutu. “The assessment of proposals is done by the banks and banks do not know politics.”
In its budget last year the government allocated US$2,5 million to the Youth Development, Indigenisation and Empowerment Ministry and US$1million is currently in the coffers of the ministry awaiting disbursement.
Administrated by the Ministry of Youths and Empowerment, the funds that were recently availed to the ministry by treasury have generated much controversy with some youths accusing the Minister of Youth Saviour Kasukuwere of being biased towards Zanu (PF).
Meanwhile the MDC Youths Assembly President Solomon Madzore has urged all youths across the political divide to apply for the loan.
“We have met as the MDC and we want the US$1 million that is currently in the hands of the ministry to be used in a manner that captures all the youth in the country. The funds are not for a single party but belong to all Zimbabweans,” said MDCYA President Solomon Madzore.
