Brits give $93 million

LONDON - African governments on Thursday gave less money to fight the Horn of Africa famine, $80 million, than has already been raised by the British public - $93 million.

At the continent's first fund-raiser for the crisis, the smallest donation, from Lesotho, was even surpassed by the efforts of an 11-year-old Ghanaian schoolboy. Most of Africa's 54 countries gave nothing.

Of the $80 million pledged by 22 nations, much had already been announced, and almost $29 million was "in kind" donations – food, transport or logistics -instead of cash.
