Zimbabwe owes Gaddafi nothing

The decision by the Zanu (PF) element in our government not to recognise the new administration in Libya is daft.

It is not up to them to decide who should be in power in Libya. The Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi has been toppled by his own people. They had had enough of being oppressed. Their rights had been diminished almost to vanishing point.

As happens eventually with all oppressed people, they shook off their shackles. Now Gaddafi is on the run, the people of Libya have been cheering their liberators. Zimbabweans should be celebrating with them – not creating new enemies with the National Transitional Council which is now running the country.

The stupid decision to order the Libyan Ambassador and his staff to leave Zimbabwe could be interpreted by the Libyans as a hostile act. We see it as interfering in the internal affairs of Libya. The NTC is the de facto government in that country today. The Arab League has recognised the new administration.

Zimbabwe should take its cue from them, as we expect the rest of the world to do with SADC on Southern African issues.

Zanu (PF)’s behaviour does not come as a surprise. This has been their modus operandi over the years – they always put their own selfish interests ahead of those of the nation.

We all know the party compromised itself by accepting ‘gifts’ from the corrupt Gaddafi to pay for its election campaigns and to ‘sweeten’ personal investment deals by members of his family.

Now it is pay-back time for Zanu (PF). But Zimbabwe owes Gaddafi nothing. We should be building bridges with the Libyan people now that they have got rid of one dictator who was a prominent member of a club that has been giving Africa a bad name for decades.
