Tennis elections abandoned

Elections to put together an executive Midlands Tennis Board were abandoned recently amid revelations that some teams boycotted the event.

Tennis Zimbabwe Manager Chris Nhokwara and Vice President Regis Bhunu waited in vain for the elections to be held, but it emerged that stakeholders who did not show up did so in protest of the voting criteria.

Teams with tennis infrastructure were the only ones who were allowed to vote.

“It side lines the majority of us who have no infrastructure for the game but are undoubtedly doing well. So we chose to stay away,” one tennis stakeholder said.

Andrew Nyakotyo, the interim MTB chairman, accused private tennis coaches of being critical of his leadership.

“The private coaches did not come, but they are the ones who make the noise. It’s incredibly inconvenient,” he said.

The elections will now be held any time between September 17 and October 3.
