Locals told The Zimbabwean this week that youths from Makokoba who went to register at a satellite voters registration centre at Mpilo Central Hospital were asked numerous questions before they could register.
“Last week, we decided to go to Mpilo to register as a group since we are all on holiday. One of the officials asked us why we had decided to come as a group. When we tried to explain that we are college students he started subjecting us to a barrage of questions,” said Miriam Ncube, a student at the National University of Science and Technology.
Ncube said the attitude of the officials was intimidating.
One of the young people, Joel Nkomo, said he was told that his name appeared as a registered person in Nketa.
“When I tried to register with my friends, I was told that I am a registered voter in Nketa. This is shocking because I have just turned 18 and I have never registered as a voter in my entire life,” said Nkomo.
Several youths in Luveve, Tshabalala, and Mabutweni said they had uncounted the same problems at various registration centres in the city’s high density suburbs.
Zapu spokesperson, Methuseli Moyo, confirmed having received similar reports.
“These are the issues we have always said should be ironed out before we have fresh polls. Why is it that the whole voters’ registration exercise is shrouded in secrecy and aspiring voters are asked irrelevant questions?” said Moyo.
Repeated efforts to get a comment from the Registrar General’s office were unsuccessful.
