Govt plan to woo investors

The government says that it is going to use the National AIDS conference to woo international HIV and AIDS donors who have indicated that they will be scaling down operations in the country to focus on other key areas such as climate change and sanitation.

Dr. Owen Mugurungi, the Director for HIV and Tuberculosis in the Ministry Health and Child Welfare, said in an interview that the focus was now on the National Aids levy through which working Zimbabweans contribute in taxes.

“We understand that quite a number of organizations are shifting to other global focuses, but we do hope that our meagre resources will sustain us. We will continue to ask the donors to assist us so that we are able to meet our obligations,” said Mugurungi.

According to confidential reports in possession of The Zimbabwean donors such as Doctors without Borders have already stopped their operations in Bulawayo, Midlands and Manicaland.

The records also confirm that the Expanded Support Programme ceases operation in December. No concrete reasons were given.

Sources within the National AIDS Council told The Zimbabwean that transparency in the use of AIDS funds was one of the issues which donors cited for pulling out.
