Professor John Makumbe, a well-respected member of the political science faculty at the University of Zimbabwe, wants to run for legislator of a small rural constituency in Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's home province.

An influential commentator on the political situation in Zimbabwe, he threw his name into the hat at the MDC anniversary held at Gwanzura Stadium over the weekend. He said he was taking off his academic hat and running for political office.

Makumbe is eyeing the Buhera West constituency, currently held by Constitutional and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Eric Matinenga.

"There is no need for primary elections," Makumbe said. "The people in Buhera say they want a white man to represent them and I have made myself available,” he said.

Makumbe is actively involved in civic action and is a human rights campaigner of international reputation. In 1996 he founded the Zimbabwe Albino Trust, and is president of the Zimbabwe Albino Association, which seeks to represent what is seen as the last minority group in the country.

“I want to tell you all that I have now removed my academic hat and I am now openly supporting MDC,” he said to thunderous applause.

He railed against Zanu (PF) misrule, and praised for the MDC. A natural politician, Makumbe stands a good chance of clinching the constituency.
