Some members of the council management feared the offices could be turned into a Zanu (PF) torture base ahead of the coming elections.
“The fact that Zanu (PF) was renovating the building before the idea was given a nod by a council full meeting, suggested the project was up to no good,” said a senior council employee on condition of anonymity.
“Zanu (PF) never made any noise when MDC established party offices wherever it desired,” said a Zanu (PF) insider at party provincial headquarters.
The development has deprived residents and people from surrounding farms of a beer hall and they are now forced to travel 5km to their nearest beer outlet in Dombotombo.
The Marondera Rural District Council Chief Executive Officer and Spokesperson, Tendai Gundo, could not be reached for comment as he was reportedly away on vacation in South Africa.
