The 14 km project was temporarily shelved in 2008 after council ran out of funds before it reached the town.

“Government has injected $10.5 million dollars towards completion of the project and work has started again. The funds will also be channelled towards expansion of the council water works and construction of three more water reservoirs”, said the works vice chairperson, Dominic Matangira.

“Wenimbe will help supply the town with clean water which needs few purification chemicals than water drawn from current sources, Nyambuya and Nyakambiri dams. But even with water from Wenimbe flowing, there is need to expand the water purification plant,” he added.

The council water works was designed to cater for 25 000 people, but the town is now home to more than 100 000 residents.
